The Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI) was founded in l938 as a public service institution, politically independent, for information and research about international political issues.

Information activities are geared towards the Swedish, general public while research at the Institute is conducted in contact and cooperation with both Swedish and international institutions and invidual researchers.

The Institute also has an important function as a forum for debate on international issues and as a meeting place for both academics and practitioners, journalists and politicians.

The Institute publishes a number of periodicals, fact sheets and books in Swedish but also research and conference reports, monographs and a yearbook in English.

The Institute houses a public library specializing in international relations Anna Lindh Library.

The Institute staff is around 40, of whom about 15 are engaged in various research programmes and projects.

The Institute is financed through sales of publications and services, an annual government subsidy, special research grants and contributions from Swedish popular movements, employers´ associations, labour unions etc.
